Children's Book Illustrator Monday

Well, dear reader, is the flu making its' way around your home, as it is mine? We are on our second week, and this particular strain includes horrendous coughing, which results in lost dinners, and aches and pains all over. Unfortunately, the littles are the ones in misery now, and so we run to and fro, easing aches with fluffy pillows, rubbing backs crouching over the toilet, and yes, giving in to the occasional "I'm hungry!", and then regretting it ten minutes later.

(All said with a tired but contented laugh, for I am certainly thankful to be healthy and available for these very moments!)

This Children's Book Monday will not include a review of one particular book, rather it will reveal one of my favorite illustrators of all time, PLUS the books she illustrated! Are you excited? Well, you needn't be, but just keep reading, please! (Caution: many links ahead!)

Betsy~Tacy. Betsy, Tacy and Tib. Betsy and Tacy Go Over the Big Hill. Betsy and Tacy Go Downtown. Winona's Pony Cart. (Have I kindled some nostalgia, ladies? Do you try to read these gems to your toddler, hoping she will find the same delight in them as you did, only to sadly shelve them, resigned to wait until she is older? No? Just me then!)

The first five books in the Betsy~Tacy series, by Maud Hart Lovelace, were illustrated by my favorite children's book artist, Lois Lenski. These already precious stories are quietly brought to life with her simple, almost childish, black and white sketches. I cannot see a Lois Lenski picture without feeling a tug at my heart to read these classics again.

Lois Lenski also wrote many children's books, and illustrated them with pictures that are delightful to the child's eye, as well as mama's!

For your olders, perhaps four through eight years old, On a Summer Day and Spring is Here will capture their attention, and bring giggles as well. For older girls, four through eight, Strawberry Girl would be a wonderful read-aloud, along with the Betsy~Tacy series!

Do you know Papa Small? How about Cowboy Small? The Little Sailboat? The Little Airplane? The Little Train? These are delightful books to read to your toddler age children - especially little boys, although my girl enjoys them as well! The stories and pictures are simple, but intriguing enough for little ones to be still (for the most part!) and listen.

So, find your nearest library and enter Lois Lenski into their search engine. Then take home a stack of these gems, and enjoy!

Happy Reading!

And please stop by Kelly's and Jennifer's to read their reviews today!

I love Lois Lenski! Strawberry Girl is one of the books my older girls remember reading about 8 years ago! I think it might be time for me to pull it out for Aubry!

I will be praying for your family--and for you, since i know that being a nurse to little ones is a LOT of work!

Hi Elise,
I remember reading, and immensely enjoying, the Betsy-Tacy-Tib books and Strawberry Girl as a young girl. Now I am tempted to dig them out of my mom's closet and read them again-- and enjoy the pictures!
I hope your little family is feeling much better soon!

Yes, yes YES!!! Elise, I'm SO excited that you have reminded me of these wonderful gems. I remember all of these books you mentioned, with Lenski's beautiful illustrations. I remember studying the pictures as I read. I also remember hovering over the shelves in our little town's library trying to find more Betsy-Tacy-Tib books. Sorry to ramble, but I am so excited. I think its time to visit some used bookstores!! Have you ever read the Five Little Pepper books??

Aack.
About the flu (I'll pray for you all!) AND about the fact that I am truly embarrassed to say that I've never read these books. I don't think. (But if they're as memorable as you say they are, then surely not.) How can that be?!?!
I've just been online at our library's website and put as many on hold as they have! I can't wait to read them.
And I agree, the illustrations are delightful-- from what I see here on your blog.
See? This is why I love Children's Book Mondays so much!
Thank you, Elise~ and may God bring health to your home. Soon!

Hi there, again...
I'm so sorry to be causing such a ruckus. Disregard my last comment about my new URL. No sooner did I start getting the word out about the change, did Google email me back and re-enable my account. I should have figured this would happen!
So you can visit me back at my old place, and so sorry about all the mess.

I have never heard of these books or the illustrator. Am I lame or what?! I love the simplicity I see as I click on the links. Thanks for sharing these! Too bad I'm not close enough to borrow a few! ;)

Elise
I always loved Lois Lenski growing up. I would always look for her books at the library when I was a little girl.
The "Betsy-tacy" series is a new find for us. (MY oldest daughter read them a few years ago, but I did not)
Now my husband (!) reads the Betsy-Tacy books to my middle girls. They like to "play" Betsy-Tacy. ("I'm Tacy, your'e Tib, (baby) is Margaret, etc, etc.)
I love the stories and am doubly please they are illustrated by Lenski!

Two of my favorite illustrators are Elois Wilkins and Sharon Kane. I don't know how many books Ms. Kane did, but I have an old Golden Book called Little Mommy that I treasure! Yes, we have suffered the flu, strep, sinus infections, and ear infections over the last several weeks. Hugs to your family.
