Duck Duck
Story and Pictures by Edna Miller
I love this book for many reasons, but first and foremost, because "Duck Duck" is what Micah called ducks as a toddler, mixing the name of the duck with the repetetive nature of its' call - "Quack Quack!" Remembering his husky baby voice, saying those words excitedly when he saw a duck, makes me smile.
This story is beautifully illustrated, and can almost be read without any words at all, but it is a little sad at a certain point, so younger children might not be able to handle it as well as did my five and eight year old.
A mallard duck and his mate settle in for the hatching of their ten eggs, but when the mallard settles out in the pond for the day, a fox comes to the nest where the mama duck is sitting with the eggs. And when the mallard returns, he finds only two eggs left, and they are hatching!
The little hatchlings learn their first duck lessons from their father, and eventually fly away with a flock of friends who fly over, but the mallard waits at the nest, hoping for his mate to return.
The remainder of the book follows the mallard as the days grow colder, and he must find a warmer place for the winter. He follows children's voices and they care for him until it is warm again.
The book ends happily, and the paintings are just breathtaking, I believe. Most people have ducks somewhere nearby, so it is also a wonderful starting point to studying ducks, their habitats, "and their enemies!" Corban adds.

Happy Reading!
(I am putting up a Mr. Linky, because I don't know how many people are doing Children's Book Reviews now, and I want to make sure you all get a chance to visit them! There may just be a few of us, but it's a start!)

This looks wonderful! And considering we just paid a visit to the ducks at our neighboorhood lake, I think this book should be at the top of our library list!
Thanks for always inspiring us!
oh, that sounds great. i love it when the book beautiful pictures.
Looks like a great pick that we'll have to try out! My baby's new favorite word is "Duck, Duck" as she tries to play "Duck Duck Goose" with her siblings. I loved Corbans' backward story and the picture of your boys in Robin Hood attire. Books sure make learning exciting!
Elise-What a great idea to do the Mr. Linky! Thank you for thinking of it. There are so many books out there that it is hard to sort through and find the gems sometimes. By offering up CBM, you are serving other women with young children.
Blessings-
Jennifer
This sounds like another book for the wishlist! Thanks, as always! I look forward to Mondays.
ooops! i am so sorry, I accidentally pressed the auto link too many times, without realizing it. I am so new to this technology stuff. Please forgive me.
I do however have a wonderful book review. If I can only figure out how to do it right.
Thank you.
Thanks for another great book we will have to get. I love this idea.
Okay, how does Mr. Linky work? I put a link to your blog? Was that right, or should I put the CBM picture on my post which directs them to you? Learning how it works!
Thanks
Letisha
I keep meaning to go and list all of your books in my planner so I can have them when I go to the library! This one looks precious.
What I fun idea! Here's my first contribution!
I'm going to have to join the fun sometime! :)
I think that the Linky is a great idea. I've seen a few people joining in, but I didn't really know how to participate or to find others. I will probably join in on Monday!
This sounds like a great book! I think my 5 and 7 year old ds would really like it.
I just ordered Duck Duck from the library. Thanks for the review.
