And the winner is...

(You have Micah to thank!)

Congratulations, my friend - please choose any one of the books I've reviewed (including today's) and e-mail me with your choice - and mailing address!

Charles Dickens and Friends

Five Lively Retellings by Marcia Williams

"Lively" is so accurate - we have had such fun reading this book! In fact, we actually kept it for the full three weeks - I just received notification that it is due at our library!

The five stories that Ms. Williams retells in comic strip form are Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, and A Tale of Two Cities.

The pages are quite busy, with pictures covering the entire spread, but it causes you to slow down and read. Inside each picture box are words and phrases taken directly from the books - Joe says to Pip, "Well, Pip...you must be a common scholar afore you can be a oncommon one." David Copperfield to Uriah Heep, "It is you who have been, in your greed and cunning, against all the world."

The classics of Mr. Dickens are full of harsh realities and cruelty. But the endings happen to fall together in an extraordinary way - so if you can plod through the difficulties with your children, taking the time to stop and explain, the conclusions will be rewarding!

I, myself, read a children's version of Great Expectations as a young girl, and it remains one of my favorite classics today. It was a pleasure to revisit the mystery, tragedy and simple joys with my children, and I am looking forward to finding more of these books by Marcia Williams.

Happy Reading!

Elise,
Sorry to hear that you are having a bit of a difficult time. I'm glad that you are going to take a little break here. You know we'll all be praying for you.

Your book choice this week looks really interesting. I've found that in books that are adaptations with illustrations, like this one, they paraphrase everything, so I'd be interested to read this and see how similar it is to the originals.

Thanks for sharing this!

Just stopping by to say hello. I was chatting with Andrea the other day (yes, face to face) and she mentioned she'd met you once. Her high regard for you sent me in this direction.
