This afternoon, while our big men took a long bike ride, the three left behind- Eliana, Gideon and I- settled into a spot of shade on the front lawn with a pile of library books. To our delight, we've discovered our first favorite book of the autumn season!
Leaf Man

The illustrations in this book are made from actual leaves! With a little bit of help from the acorn, the pinecone, and a spare maple seed pod, Leaf Man comes to life as he goes where the wind takes him.
We love turning the die-cut pages... Oh, these are nice! Eliana whispered as she ran her fingers across the top of the page to turn it. And we truly found joy in discovering pictures in the leaves... ducks, geese, rabbits, fish, garden vegetables, whole orchards of pears and apples and cherries... and so much more!
The leaves all have that wonderful burnished look of fall; rust, copper, gold, bronze, even magenta. And when we came to the last page and were invited to listen for a rustle in the leaves, how glad we were to already by outdoors, and to have a gentle breeze today! We stilled to listen to the leaves on the baby maples Daddy is growing in our sideyard, and the quaking aspens at the neighbors across the way. From the catalpa next door to the full, green, flowerless lilac bush nearby, the wind rustled and rattled and we smiled. Even Gideon stilled for a moment, mostly wondering, I am sure, at our quiet.
My big boys will enjoy the front and back inside covers, for there are pictures and pictures of leaves with their names printed beside- wonderful inspiration for our nature notebooks!
